Covercote – Eco-renovation in the Yorkshire Dales

Covercote is a 200-year-old listed property in the Yorkshire Dales National Park recently restored and re-furbished by Sylvanus. A few years ago, this old coach house dating from Jane Austen’s day was completely uninhabitable, and in an advanced state of disrepair. Now it is superbly comfortable, decorated and outfitted to the most exacting and up-to-date standards without losing any of its original charm. Sylvanus oversaw this transformation, comprising of a completely new two-storey extension and major interior and exterior renovation, from start to finish; he did all the joinery and much of the building, planning, interior design and decoration himself. His early insistence on a ground heat source demonstrates his commitment to the use of environmentally-friendly methods and materials. The heat source now amply warms the entire house even on the coldest days of a North Yorkshire winter, on an enviably low fuel bill.

The house’s superb kitchen units, bathrooms and furniture, including dining tables and chairs, occasional tables, wardrobes, beds and side tables, were hand-crafted in Sylvanus’ workshop. Sylvanus looks forward to facing new challenges, with new opportunities to apply the wealth of all-round building experience he has gained on this exceptional project. He would be happy to use Covercote’s fixtures as a model, or to embark on a completely new stylistic direction.
